Interview of Mentor

Q: What is your full name?

Ans: Tracey Mantrone

Q: Where are you from (city, state, country)?

Ans: Valley Stream, NY (in Nassau County, Long Island)

Q: Where did you go to college? For how long? Would you like to go back to school?

Ans: BA - in English with Classical Civilization minor UMAss at Amherst (4 years)

MA in Folklore and Mythology - UCLA (2 years)

MLIS (Master of Library and Information Science) - Pratt Institute (2 1/2 years)

I would like to be able to take more classes in librarianship and in web design. I'm going to sign up for online web design classes and well as a second online Spanish class. I have taken some before through www.ed2go.com. I have a hard time attending physical classes since I have to work.

Q: Why did you choose your professional field?

Ans: I enjoyed doing research and learning. I also like problem-solving and training people. I learned a little bit about many topics in college, which is useful for a librarian.

Q: What got you involved in this of work? What inspired you to do it?

Ans: I had worked in food service for 5 years and was burning out. One of my friends had decided to become a librarian (she works for NYPL) and encouraged me to became one.

Q: Why did you choose this particular job at this particular company?

Ans: Brooklyn was the only library system that would hire me before I entered a Master's program for library science. I was hired as a library assistant and worked my way through the MLIS degree. I paid for it myself.

Q: How long have you worked here?

Ans: Since January, 1999.

Q: What is your job title?

Ans: Senior Librarian III - Library Information Supervisor

Q: What are some of the challenges you faced working here?

Ans: Not enough staff, extremely difficult patrons, leaky buildings, trying to get my staff to accept the changing nature of librarianship. On Monday, four of my staff were given 90-day-layoff notices and may be gone in September. I have been attending rallies and advocating for the library. It is difficult to inspire people who may not have job in 3 months.

Q: What is the best part of your job?

Ans: I enjoy helping people with reference questions and doing outreach. I also enjoy redesigning the collection and building design in order to make them more useful and accessible to patrons. I recently was asked to buy the entire adult non-fiction collection for the Fort Hamilton branch, which is scheduled to reopen in the fall, and I really enjoyed choosing the best collection available for the branch.

Q: Do you enjoy the kind of work you do? Why or why not?

Ans: I enjoy the work because I never know what will happen during the course of a day. I usually come to work with 3 or 4 things that must get done and then go with the flow. I like the controlled chaos aspect of supervising. I also feel that I am making a difference in the lives of my patrons. I wish that I could actually eat lunch for once without getting interrupted by some problem that needs to be solved or patron that must be placated.

Q: What advice would you give to teenage interns (such as myself) getting ready for college?

Ans: Do as many interships as possible. Ask questions. Take classes outside of school, especially technology classes. Always remain curious. When you are in college, also do internships. I wish I had done some when I was in college instead of mostly concentrating on academics. I would have developed a better sense of what I wanted to do and more knowledge of my strengths and weaknesses.

Q: What advice you give to teenage intern (such as myself) preparing to find a career in a real world?

Ans: Remember that your actual job title will change over the years but you will continue to use the skill sets that you develop. Concentrate on learning as many skills as possible. It is also important to develop critical thinking skills, a work ethic, and to use your common sense.

Internship Final Reflection-Advertisement

The goals that I achieve from the earliest post are, that my english become more better then before, I impress my mentor from my work and do a really good job. The most important thing that i learned in last 12 weeks is that professional life is so responsible. My internship is great place for interning, doing arts and crafts program with kids is really amazing and decorating bullets board, doing book shelving I like that all. By working in the library I learned that professional life is so challenging and responsible. The challenges that I overcome on my internship is about the activities that I teach/learn to the kids and the project for the summer reading program because summer reading is a really big program, its the competition of all the libraries in the brooklyn so its challenging for me that what I make because every time I have to make something different then others but still i enjoy it. If I start internship from next week, the thing that i do differently is that I will enjoy my internship and do some different activities in arts and crafts program. The thing that I will miss about my internship site is the program called arts and crafts. Thats a really nice program and I love to do that. If someone get this job I will advice that person not to lose this chance because its a resonable place for interning and its really nice job, you will never get bore instead you will enjoy it alot.

Midpoint Refelection

There is a huge difference between the environment of internship place and in school. The internship place is so quite as compared to school, both places are the study centers, but library looks like a home of books too many varieties of book almost in every language, they have a lot of programs eg. arts and craft, ESL classes, chess club, movie/story classes and etc. In school our teachers teach us but in library we have to do our own we have to study independently. Library and school have their own rules for example in library we have to keep decipline but in school its different.
I have good relations with my mentor and with other staf. Its a great opertunity for me to work with them now i have an experince like how i have to do work. My relation is good with them and they all appreciate me and my work.
The skills that i gained from my internship is the confidence that how i have to do work and experince of a future life. I think my english is better now because in library i have to talk with different peoples who speak soo differently and high english and now i get them like what they saying so its really help me to improve my english.
The challenges that i have are the projects of library Ihave to learn different type of things in arts to the little kids, so it is challenging because I have to see like what they can make easily i collect all the stuf for them and be ready before the class.
It is little hard to do work and continue your studies to because sometimes I get tired and don't want to anything, but i do,sometimes I do my little homework in break on my internship and sometimes I do it late night. So i don't get behind in school studies.
In the next six remaining weeks of internship i have to make my name in the library i have to learn english and increase my confidence.
As being out and about in New York City i learned that everyone is fighting for their career. They don't make too many connections with other peoples they like to work by their ownselfs.

Four weeks into internship

The full name of my internship site is Mapelton library. It is located at 17 Ave 60 st. My internship is only on monday, tuesday and wednesday.I leave school at about 11.40 and it takes me 40-45 minutes getting there. Every monday i work until 5:00 and on tuesday and wednesday i work from 1:00 to 4:00 clock. Tracy, my mentor is the one who sign my time log.

The most challenging part of my internship is to arrange the books by order according to authors name and alphabatically (the title). It is challenging because one author rites to many books and sometimes people put the books of same author in differnt shelves so its hard to find the books and put them in thier right place.

The highlights or memorable moment of my first three weeks is the program (art and carfts) with little kids its a really nice i enjoy alot to work with them. And i make a posters and displays that my mentor really like it and want me to take a part in competition, she want me too learn things to kids.
